The Fundamentals of a Good Website
Ever wondered what makes a good website? It’s no mystery – in fact, great websites share the following characteristics. They’re:
- User-friendly – with simple site architecture, good websites are easy-to-navigate; no searching for links or pages, it’s all there at a glance. If your site has loads of content, a search function is handy.
- Aesthetically pleasing – featuring simple, clean design, good websites are easy on the eye; no fussy fonts, bad colour combinations and grotty images to clutter the screen.
- Search Engine Optimised – this means that certain features of the website, from content to meta-data (some behind-the-scenes stuff you can’t see) have been enhanced to make the site more easily found by the big search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and Bing
- Interesting to read – with original, high quality, fresh content (which appeals, not only to returning website visitors, but to the search engines, by the way). Be sure that web content is written in an easy style and engaging tone, and is free from grammar and punctuation errors.
- Quick to download – Bad websites are unnecessarily burdened with large images, complex code and flash animation which can take forever to download – frustrating! Many web visitors simply quit slow sites, so rather keep things simple and slick.
Results-oriented – no point having a website which isn’t serving its purpose! Define what you want your website to achieve (delivering a brand message, educating and informing customers or driving sales leads) and develop a site which delivers on your goals.
